Different Drummers

In 2008, the Bronx-based Universes ensemble came to town as part of the National Performing Arts Convention, offering a reading of Ameriville, a new kind of performance work in progress, at Curious Theatre, a longtime supporter of new and exciting works. “They blew the roof off this building,” reports Curious spokeswoman Tonya Malik. “Usually, no matter how moved you are by a play, you still just come in, you sit down, you watch it and then you get up and leave. But people at this reading literally moved up out of their seats and were hooting and hollering. It was like being at a concert.”

That was the unfinished work; now imagine the final product. Hard to describe (Malik says it’s a little bit “Stomp-ish” and a little bit slam poetry, held together with bluesy musical undertones), the story inspired by Hurricane Katrina’s effect on the little people of New Orleans is a tour de force that tackles the big issues in ways not usually experienced on the Denver stage. It opens Novembr 14 at 8 p.m. at Curious, 1080 Acoma Street; shows are Wednesdays through Sundays through December 5. For tickets, $18 to $42, visit www.curioustheatre.org or call 303-623-0524.
Wednesdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sundays, 2 p.m. Starts: Nov. 12. Continues through Dec. 5, 2009
