Pushing the Envelope

After the astonishing popularity of the fringe productions Power to Pleasing: The Sex Lives of Teenage Girls and Pressure to Prove: The Sex Lives of Teenage Boys, writers, actors and producers Christa Ray, Liz Stanton and Bethany Urban decided to just keep going. Their latest full-length production, Promiscuity, Passion and Promises: The Sex Lives of Teenagers encompasses both the male and female experience -- and perhaps even a little more -- and opens today at the Dairy Center for the Arts for a short run.

“We were able to go deeper into topics. We’ve always gotten excellent positive feedback; the teenagers who’ve seen it feel really reflected in the play, their experiences are validated,” notes Ray. “What this new show portrays that wasn’t in the last two shows is romance, positive sexual experience, adult mentors that help teens heal from difficult experiences and empower them, involved parents, more references to the media’s influence on teen sexuality and expression. There are some dark moments, but they offer glimpses of positive resolutions.”
