The Film Dailies

Staring Up at Giants Again
Self-released

The Film Dailies clearly love the heyday of synth pop. Early New Order, Human League, maybe a bit of Tears for Fears or Pet Shop Boys — you can hear all that and more in Staring up at Giants Again. That's not to say it's completely retro. There are nods to post-Postal Service indie-tronica, but the clean, minimal, synthesizer-and-guitar aesthetic rules here. Vocally, Molly Cherington and Michael Lloyd take turns at the forefront, and both voices, although occasionally too far up front in the mix and too clean, work well with the material. As an album, Staring falls a little short, but the best songs — "The Circus Life," "Color Cartoon" and "Redwoods" — are worth a spot on your iPod and point toward a bright future for the group.
