Angels Among Us

Keith L. Hatten, artistic director for Shadow Theatre Company, cites two very important experiences as inspiration for his direction of Christmas of the Angels. The first is hearing his office manager tell the story of being rescued from the 97th floor of the World Trade Center’s second tower by a Russian man she could barely understand.

“She knows that that was an angel,” says Hatten, “and I believe her.”

The second involves one of Hatten’s regular walks along the trails of Aurora. “One particular day,” he says, “I saw a campsite, and it was like one person had been there, not a group of people. We’ve all seen communities of homeless people living together. But who would live under the street at Alameda and Chambers by themselves without fear? I was like, ‘Wow, maybe that would be an angel.’”

With a driving concept of “You never know who your angel may be,” Christmas of the Angels follows a seemingly destitute group of indigents gathered beneath a viaduct as they tell the biblical story of the birth of Christ as the angels delivering the news saw it. Gospel music from the Aurora Symphony and dance accompany the hour-long production, which opens today at 7:30 p.m. and plays weekends through December 20. Tickets are $18. Shadow Theatre Company is at 1468 Dayton Street in Aurora. Get more information at www.shadowtheatre.com or by calling 720-857-8000.
