It Takes a Village

I still remember the first time I ate at Rosa Linda’s Mexican Cafe, years ago. It wasn’t much to look at, particularly then, but it was clearly a family affair, with the kids and dad Virgilio Aguirre taking orders and bussing the tables and mama Rosa Linda hard at work in the kitchen, turning out rustic shredded-beef burritos to die for and big, green-chile-drenched platters of the best chile rellenos in town. And, like that, it was my favorite place to eat, as much for the spirit of the place as for the delicious food. It’s changed over the years, the kids have grown up and made families of their own, but one thing is constant: Every November for the past 25 years, Rosa Linda’s has thrown a Mexican-style Thanksgiving banquet for the huddled masses. Just last year, notes daughter Linda Aguirre, they fed about 3,000 people a feast of shredded turkey, green chile, rice and beans, vegetables and mashed potatoes. Some meals were delivered by volunteers; others were served at the restaurant, located at 2005 West 33rd Avenue.

But it takes a lot of donations to feed three thou. And that’s where you come into the story: Rosa Linda’s is accepting food donations daily through 9 a.m. Thanksgiving morning. Needless to say, they need turkeys, but dried pinto beans, rice, stuffing mix, potatoes, butter, paper plates and other items are also at a premium. For information, call 303-455-0608 or go to www.rosalindasmexicancafe.com.
Mondays-Saturdays, 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Starts: Nov. 2. Continues through Nov. 25, 2009
