Ride the Rails

Forget about that bumper-to-bumper winter-weekend drive to and from the high country. Today, Rocky Mountain region pro-am boarders will be riding the rails right here in the heart of Denver — in the street, no less — as part of the Backyard Bang Rail Jam, hosted by the Art Institute of Colorado, 1200 Lincoln Street, and featuring a state-of-the-art ramp built courtesy of Galvanic Design, a company that specializes in putting on urban boarding events. An idea borrowed from the institute’s sister academy in Portland, the rail jam is free and open to the public today from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Along with the competitions and demonstrations, AI Colorado and Salomon Snowboards will offer live music, DJs, refreshments, giveaways and pro autograph sessions; an auction of more than thirty unique snowboards designed by AI students, alumni and potential students, currently on display in the school’s John Jellico Gallery, will top off the afternoon.

AI spokeswoman Dres Romero hopes the event will become a Denver tradition; get details at http://polls.westword.com/polls/den/backyardbang.
Sat., Nov. 21, 11 a.m.-5 p.m., 2009
