Wasted on the Young

People around the world today are celebrating the official release of the 2009 Beaujolais Nouveau, and local food and wine lovers are no exception. "Historically, Beaujolais is made with the first grapes of the season," says Angela Bruns, assistant director and event coordinator for the French American Chamber of Commerce, which is hosting the eleventh annual Beaujolais & Beyond Festival. "This is a way to celebrate that they've finished the grape harvest, so 'Let's drink the wine!'"

The young wine is popular for its short shelf life and surprisingly light flavor, but Bruns says that the festival will also feature over 25 different French wines, as well as cognac. More than twenty restaurants and vendors will present samples, including Black Pearl, Encore, Root Down, Jonesy's EatBar, Argyll GastroPub, 1515 and Brasserie Felix.

The festival goes from 6 to 10 p.m. at Mile High Station, 2027 West Colfax Avenue. Attendees get a souvenir wine glass for sampling. There will also be a silent auction, aerial performers and a culinary competition. Tickets are $55 in advance ($45 for FACC members) and $65 at the door.
