Feline Fetish: How cat lovers turn into cat hoarders

To the uninitiated, managing a feral colony may sound like something that slightly demented cat fanciers do in the privacy of their own homes — until animal-control officers show up to haul away scores of starving and diseased critters.

But there's a world of difference between the two. A managed colony can be a feral cat's only hope for a relatively stable, safe existence. Keeping scores of cats in your house is known as hoarding — which, more often than not, turns into animal cruelty.

Researchers are still trying to fathom the impulse that turns some animal lovers into hoarders. Some think it's related to obsessive-compulsive and anxiety disorders that compel people to collect all sorts of junk. Others say it can be triggered by a number of different psychological factors, with varying degrees of consequences. "It's one of the most misunderstood areas of our relationship with animals," a prominent professor of animal ecology told Westword a few years ago ("Pet Peeve," September 30, 2004).

Hoarders often begin as animal rescuers but soon become overwhelmed. Last year a foreclosure in Teller County forced the relocation of three horses, six dogs — and sixty cats. Adoption agencies found that the cats had been well cared for until the owner lost her house. Another cat lover in Battlement Mesa decided she could no longer handle the 86 cats in her two-bedroom apartment and called authorities for help.

Yet in many cases, the hoarding isn't discovered until it turns deadly. In 2007, Aurora officers had to wear firefighting equipment just to negotiate the stench while removing more than a hundred dead or sick cats from a house and garage. The owner had left the premises two weeks earlier, saying she was going on vacation.

Colorado's most famous hoarder was Lu Anne Strickland, wife of former state senate president Ted Strickland. In 1989, authorities found more than 100 cats living in a feces- and urine-bedecked home in Westminster, but no criminal charges were filed. Two years later, after Strickland moved her animal-rescue efforts to Strasburg, investigators found several animal corpses, buried and unburied, around the property. Hundreds of dogs and cats were removed — most healthy, some not. Strickland received a deferred judgment for a misdemeanor charge and later resumed her rescue activities.

Although they claim to be helping, animal hoarders accumulate large numbers of animals to their detriment. All too often, animal hoarders are unable to provide even minimal standards of care and lack the insight to understand that their actions often result in severe neglect, suffering and death. This debilitating behavior can be devastating to families, put elders and children at risk, and incur significant cost to communities for cleanup or demolition. Animal hoarding crosses all socioeconomic boundaries, although statistically it is more frequent in older, isolated, socioeconomically disadvantaged women. Hoarders sometimes masquerade as legitimate animal sheltering, sanctuary, or rescue groups. It is important to distinguish them from these legitimate and commendable efforts, which put the needs of animals first.

tnrrealitycheck has already been debunked in this thread. Go peddle your BS somewhere else, or better yet, don't. Stop supporting the unnecessary killing of animals.

TNRrealitycheck.COM is listed anonymously by proxy through site dedicated to anonymity, not truth or information. see for yourself. (http://www.networksolutions.com/whois-search/... ) (http://www.domainsbyproxy.com/About.aspx... ) What neither TNRRealitycheck.COM and the bird lovers dont tell any of us is that 10 the number of birds are killed by cats and 100 times more by windows in our houses and offices. Direct from the us Govt: Not some animal abuser who hides behind anonymity to sread misinformation. http://www.fs.fed.us/psw/publications/documen... . i mean all you could do to save Millions of birds every year is put some stickers on the windows and a whistle on your car bumper. why not do that? why kill thousands of cats dumped by humans. the cats are only doing what comes naturally at this point. Humans are the blame. and killing it to make it go away so you can feel good about yourself is not the answer. I mean if TNRrealitycheck.COM is so factual? why hide? why not counter the research? why not present some REAL information instead of emotional pleas?

TNR does work and reduces the feral cat population eventually to ZERO if it is applied but this takes a few years. ALSO just because a person has a lot of animals in their house does NOT make them a hoarder. A true "animal" hoarder does not take care of the animals. This entails food, water and medical care. There a lots of people who have a lot of animals and the animals are taken care of properly and they are not hoarders. Usually people who hate cats call anyone with more than one cat a hoarder. This is especially the case with people who do not support TNR. Their way of degrading this very successful process of reducing the number of feral cats, TNR, is to call these volunteers hoarders because they want all TNR stopped. Well TNR will never be stopped. We are determined to help all cats no matter what names cat haters call us. TNR is done for the good of the cats and for the good of society. Thank you.

Trap/Neuter/Release of feral cats is also animal abuse. TNR is nothing more than "hoarding without walls". Cats are domestic animals not wildlife. Our wild creatures should not have to compete with these introduced invaders or be killed by an abandoned pet that is being fed by a misguided caregiver. Trap and remove stray and feral cats and also remove the artificial food source and your cat problem will disperse.
