The snow in Crested Butte this year is “fantastic!,” says Janelle Smiley of the Crested Butte Nordic Center. Last week, two feet fell at Lily Lake, a popular site for Nordic skiers, and that bodes well for the center’s annual Thanksgiving Training Camp, an invigorating weekend refresher that offers classes and competitions for folks who can’t wait to get out and stomp through the snow. Camp kicks off at 8 a.m. today with pre-clinic waxing, followed by a series of classic skiing clinics; the same schedule repeats tomorrow for skate-skiing aficionados, topped off by a pasta dinner and silent auction in the evening. And Sunday is race day, when participants put their newly honed skills to the test in 5K Skate and Classic competitions, which start at 10 a.m. “It’s just a great, fun time of learning and challenging yourself,” Smiley says of the camp.
