Shine a Light

Farolito lighting has long been a holiday tradition in Santa Fe, New Mexico — but Colorado’s own Fort restaurant in Morrison has been hosting a similar tradition for at least the past twenty years. “The event itself is kind of trifold,” explains Sarah Shirazi, director of development for the Tesoro Foundation, which has taken over the Farolitos at the Fort. “One part is to honor a leader in the community who has made a significant contribution — who has lit our hearts, minds and souls — someone who has had a lifetime of commitment to the community. The second part is to really ring in the holiday season and sing carols, do a lot of traditional holiday things. And the third aspect is remembering those we have lost, in the pine cone ceremony.” Participants write the name of a loved one on a piece of paper and tuck it into their pine cone; while singing carols, the pine cones are added to a flickering fire, “and we like to think that the wishes and the thoughts that we have, those messages are carried up to heaven to remember those who are no longer with us.”
