A Real Turn-On

Plug in, DIYers: Local designer Lynne Bruning, whose own creations include a sonar garment for the visually impaired, says that wearable computers — “eTextiles” fitted with usable electronics, such as conductive thread, LED lights and microprocessors — not only make in-the-moment fashion statements, but are a boon to science. And the art of plugged-in couture isn’t all that difficult, she insists; as long as you begin with the right tools and guidelines, you’ll be turning handbags into iPod docks in no time.

Look for Bruning to offer plenty of helpful hints when she teaches Wearable Computers: From Couture Designs to Adaptive Uses, today from 1 to 4 p.m. at Club Workshop, 999 Vallejo Street, Unit 2. “I’ve been doing this for a couple of years and have learned a lot of useful tips and tricks: How do you make a connection? How do you keep from short-circuiting? I’ll cover it all,” Bruning says. “What I hope to do with the class is open it up to average DIYers and let them see the possibilities.”

The $50 registration fee includes a basic eTextile sewing kit from Aniomatic, supplier information and hands-on demonstrations, as well as exposure to Bruning’s own eTextile collection; you should be able to set up a simple switch-on circuit at the end of class. To register, e-mail lynne@lynnebruning.com or call 720-272-0956.
