Chip Off the Old Block

Snow sculpture, an integral part of Breckenridge’s annual January Ullr Fest for a good twenty years, has come a long way since its early days as a community effort, according to Rob Neyland, a co-founder of the frosty mountain burg’s International Snow Sculpture Championships. But as Breckenridge’s profile rose in the world of competitive snow sculpture, he says, something got lost in translation.

“We regret that, in the process, the streets of Breckenridge were stripped of a wonderful outpouring of native street art created in the old days,” Neyland laments. “So over the last few years, it became the goal of team Breckenridge to return that art form to its roots.” And so the Breckenridge Snowflake Challenge made its debut last year, offering big cash prizes and other incentives to teams of local folks looking to have some fun building glorified snowmen and the like along Main Street in Breckenridge.

“We all have an inner snow sculptor inside of us,” Neyland says. And the Snowflake Challenge, which begins today and continues through December 12, should offer plenty of proof – which you can then photograph all through the holiday season, since the sculpture will remain up through the month.
