The Stars Have Aligned at CSFAC

The mysteries of space have always held the power to inspire art. With that in mind, NASA created an art program in 1962, calling upon the talents of everyone from Norman Rockwell to Andy Warhol to explore and illustrate the beauty, majesty and wonder of exploring the last, greatest frontier. "They saw it as a way to connect with the public," explains Blake Milteer, curator of American art for the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center. "I think that's pretty visionary, to recognize that it's actually art that will best connect their scientific endeavors to the public."

Now you can see the results of that visionary program at NASA | Art: 50 Years of Exploration, a touring Smithsonian exhibit with 73 pieces that celebrate the wonders of space in diverse media, including painting, photography and sculpture. Accompanying the official NASA artwork is a selection of complementary works from local artists Eric Bransby, Monica Petty Aiello and Vance Kirkland, plus a film series, a play, art classes and a lecture series. "We wanted to use the NASA show as an opportunity to broaden the spectrum of our offerings under the umbrella of a single theme," Milteer says.
