This Chanukah Cook-off Is One Hot Potato

If you've ever slung latkes — from the grated potatoes and onions to the hot oil — you know how labor-intensive it would be to cook 150 of them. But if you've ever eaten a plate full of these mouth-watering potato pancakes, you also know how quickly they disappear. A group of chefs will take on this challenge today at Temple Micah's Top Latke Cook-off and Chanukah Party, competing for Best Traditional Latke and Most Innovative Latke; there's also a kids' competition. In the past, participants have used everything from green chiles to sweet potatoes.

A live auction of candelabras and other treats will accompany the contest, says temple spokeswoman Elaine Lee. "Latkes tend to go fast, so if you don't get there early, they may be gone. But we'll have plenty of other food, so no one will go away hungry."

The party runs from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. when Rabbi (and latke judge) Adam Morris will begin his Chanukah service and concert; attendees are encouraged to bring their own Menorah and candles to add to the festive feel at the temple, 2600 Leyden Street. The cook-off costs $20 per family or $5 for singles; RSVP by calling 303-388-4239 or e-mailing office@micahdenver.org. There is no cost for the service.
Fri., Dec. 18, 4:30-6:30 p.m., 2009
