Howl at the Moon

When Brooke Kline and Melissa Strasser of the White Owl decided to throw a New Year's Eve bash with a 1920s/’30s theme, they called on Jessie de la Cruz of Betty Bluebird event planners. "The decade theme was pretty much the only framework they gave us, so we just ran with it,” says de la Cruz. "I'm an archivist on the side; I started pulling old documents and exploring speakeasies."

And the rest is history, or will be soon: the Howl New Year's Eve Gala, a party designed to transport attendees to the world of underground, illegal liquor providers of the past. "We wanted to create a submersion environment that pays homage to speakeasies while being rough around the edges," De la Cruz notes. "We're really trying to push beyond your typical New Year's Eve event and transport people somewhere different."

Show up at the White Owl, 321 East 45th Avenue, to obtain the secret password and location of the gala, where you'll be entertained by burlesque performances by Tatiana TaTa, live music by Reverend Deadeye and DJs Scottie, Tyler Snow and Josh D. There will be games, professional portraiture, cocktails from times past and much more; tickets are $15 in advance, $20 the day of the event and $50 for VIP, all-you-can-drink admission.
