Dance 101

There are those who take dance way too seriously, and then there are those who don’t. If you’re one of those folks who avoid the art form like the plague because of the former, here’s your chance to get in touch with its lighter nuances, with help from the latter: Control Group Productions presents an ongoing Dance Night for Beginners series, which aims to tear down the image of the Jules Feiffer poseur in a black leotard and replace her with something a little more user-friendly.

Here’s how it works: Each of four choreographers offers a short piece twice — once in its regular form, and once with sportscaster-style commentary by the hosting Truxel Twins, who offer egalitarian observations from both the expert and novice points of view. Tonight’s guests include members of Wrecking Ball/Square Product Theatre, Syzygy Butoh, the Raqs Nova Belly Dance Troupe and others (nothing like a little variety).

It’s also a chance to show support for the Packing House Center for the Arts, a newer experimental performing-arts nonprofit located off the beaten path, at 835 East 50th Avenue; for information and tickets, $10, go to www.controlgroupproductions.org.
