Ullr Nothing in Breckenridge

Named for the Norse god of snow, who dumps more than 300 inches of sweet, sweet powder on Breckenridge each year, the Ullr Fest is one of the longest-running events in town. "It's in its 47th year," says spokeswoman Carly Grimes. "It began when the town was really small and the ski resort was just getting started, so it has that homegrown feel. And it's so different from any other festival that any other town hosts."

The fest kicks off today with the Ullr Skating Party at the Stephen C. West Ice Arena; you can also enjoy restaurant and bar specials through Friday, January 15. Other highlights include tomorrow's Nordic party and bonfire; Tuesday's Ullr Dating Game; Wednesday's Ullympics (featuring such events as the frying-pan toss and group ski racing); Thursday's parade down Main Street; Friday's comedy night; and Saturday's Chilly Chili Cook-Off, which will wrap up the week-long festivities.

Bring your Viking helmet, your skis or snowboard and your party-hearty attitude. "If you can only make one event, the parade is the one to come for," Grimes says. "It's really fun, and definitely different from anything else you've ever seen before." Visit www.gobreck.com or call 1-877-593-5260 for information.
