I like the way Denver’s galleries always bounce back after the New Year, with a plethora of fresh exhibitions making tracks through the snow and cold of January.

The best New Year offering, metaphorically speaking, could be The Icebreaker Show, opening tonight at Ice Cube Gallery, one of the district’s newest art venues, located in the Dry Ice Factory co-op at 3320 Walnut Street. Conceived as a RiNo showcase and neighborhood mixer, the show was juried by Westword art critic Michael Paglia, who takes his job very seriously. “I try to consider how well the artists have solved the problems they’ve set out for themselves, as well as the level of accomplishment,” Paglia says of his process as a juror. And while in RiNo, do as the RiNos do: An additional stop at Ironton Studios & Gallery, 3636 Chestnut Place, is definitely worthwhile, since you can take a look at the detailed work of Heidi Jung, whose ghostly black-and-white images of flora evoke her roots as a photographer. A trip to the Navajo Art District is also in order. This is the last weekend to catch the 30th Anniversary Group Show, with works by Pirates both past and present at the seminal Denver co-op gallery Pirate: Contemporary Art, at 3655 Navajo Street. Also of interest is EDGE Pairings, across the street at Edge Gallery, 3658 Navajo; it features works by invited artists shown side by side with works by EDGE members. And finally, for some resplendent rococo invention, Mercurio, a solo show of silvered glass works by Dale Chihuly, opens tonight at Pismo Fine Art Glass, 2770 East Second Avenue, with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. The glass master’s Venetian-series vessels remain on view through March 14, along with a stunning “Icicle Chandelier” and more.
