Dula Gets His Moment

Before he took over as director of the Denver Art Museum, Christoph Heinrich was the curator of modern and contemporary art. In that capacity, he organized Embrace! a blockbuster exhibit that features the work of international art stars along with a handful of Denver’s best, including painter Rick Dula.

Dula’s inclusion was a natural, since he’s spent the last few years doing photorealist renditions of the DAM’s Hamilton Building. “I felt like I had the perfect confluence of circumstances,” says Dula. “I had photographed the building from every direction and then done paintings. Christoph came to see my paintings and took an interest in my work. I thought it would be wonderful to do a painting of the wall that was like an X-ray, and when he was conceiving of the show, that dream came true.”

The resulting “A Moment of Time: Here” has been a big hit, and tonight at 7 p.m., Dula will be in the Sharp Auditorium on the lower level of the Hamilton to talk about his art in the first of the Logan Lectures for 2010. Tickets for the event run from $8 to $18; call 720-913-0150 or go to DAMContemporaries.denverartmuseum.org for reservations.
Third Wednesday of every month; Wed., June 23. Starts: Jan. 20. Continues through May 19, 2010
