Mount Righteous

Wednesday, January 20, hi-dive, 720-570-4500.

Though its music has been referred to as "orchestral punk," Mount Righteous, which hails from Grapevine, Texas, is more akin to sprawling indie-pop outfits like the Polyphonic Spree. Unlike the latter, however, this nine-piece plays its shows without electric instruments, which has given Righteous the ability to perform in more conventional venues, as well as parking lots and parks. Almost all of the songs are written as sing-alongs. The enthusiastic and celebratory nature of a Mount Righteous show feels like a secret — but entirely inclusive — practice for an upcoming carnival or for hitting the road with the circus. Blending equal parts marching-band music and crust-punk-folk busking with a lo-fi pop aesthetic, the outfit lives up to its name.
