When local event diva Dana Cain decides to curate an art show, she can’t just leave it at that. “I might be the curator, but at heart I’m really an event planner, so it’s natural for me to think of how I can turn it into an event,” she says. And how. When The Love Show, a Valentine-themed exhibit opens on February 12 at CORE New Art Space, it will be the scene of unheard-of hoopla: The winner of Cain’s Win a Dream Date With Phil Bender contest will arrive in a limo with Bender, the extremely laid-back and undisputed Pirate king of Denver’s storied co-op gallery scene, at his or her side. Bender, who’s rarely seen wearing anything but denim and flip flops.

Joke? No joke: “It had to be just the right type of person — someone whom everybody loves but nobody would consider a dream date,” Cain says of her pick for a local art-world dream date. And to his credit, Bender is in it all the way. He even posed — all dolled up and costumed in sunglasses, an ascot and a lapel rose by designer/stylist Mona Lucero — for an unlikely pre-contest photo shoot. “Mona really had to crack the whip to get him out of his denim jacket,” Cain notes.
