Fringe Politics

There will be a couple of changes at this year’s Big Fringe Lottery Party, hosted by the Boulder International Fringe Festival. First, it’s moving to a new venue: Boulder’s blue, a-frame Wesley Chapel, which Pastor Roger Wolsey is renovating to accommodate cultural events. And second, the lottery is morphing into an all-play and no-work format that focuses more on public participation in choosing the names of this summer’s festival performers and less on extraneous performances.

“The performers are all there to see if they’ve gotten into the festival,” Fringe director Dave Ortolano explains. “Nobody paid attention to the performances in the past.” Instead, the event, a Country Flair-themed soirée, will unfold in a fun format featuring party games (yes, Ortolano notes, the kind that a seven-year-old would appreciate), standup commentary by Freak Train’s GerRee Hinshaw, and a mix of music, food and drinks. Costumes are encouraged, and game winners earn the honor of picking names from the lottery hat; this year, there are about 48 slots to fill. The choosing begins at 7 p.m. at 1290 Folsom Street in Boulder; go to www.boulderfringe.com.
