Have a Ball

Candy Smith, the woman who created the Tuaca Body Art Ball, says it all started with her identical twin sister. "She was the executive producer of the Art House, a theater house in Dallas," explains Smith, "and it was going broke. So we had one last-ditch effort for a fundraiser. We knew all these artists and performers, and I thought, 'Why don't we throw a body-art ball?'"

The ball was a smashing success and led to a seven-year partnership with Tuaca, which has allowed Smith to take her show on the road. "Because of its name, I think there's a misperception that you're going to find something at the event that is racy or maybe startling," notes Smith, but that's not the case. "It's a really smart performance; these are people who are masters at their own craft. You go and think you'll get a hot, saucy night, and you leave feeling like you were part of something really cool. It's an unexpected nuance."

The performers become living, breathing works of art at the hands of skilled visual artists, and attendees can vote for the winners via text message at the end of the night. This year's event will raise money for Food Bank of the Rockies through pictures with performers, donations and other interactions; Tuaca will match donations, dollar for dollar, up to $1,000. The 21-and-up ball starts tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Gothic Theatre, 3263 South Broadway in Englewood; admission is free. For more information, visit www.tuacabodyartball.com.
