The Nuts and Bolts of Art

When he was a kid, Tim Flynn dreamed of owning a hardware store — not one of those sleek big-box operations, but a cozy shop that reeked of grass seed. Life took him on a different course, though, and this fantasy of Flynn’s never came to pass, but that hasn’t stopped him from creating his own version of it. That’s the backstory to Timmy Flynn’s Hardware Store, now at Foothills Art Center, an exhibit in which Flynn has assembled the work of more than forty Colorado artists whose pieces are displayed as though they were in an old-timey hardware store.

“Since we’re renovating our main space, we thought it would be fun to play with that and to do a larger version of the show Tim did at Edge a few years ago,” explains Foothills curator Michael Chavez. The concept is very kid-friendly, and from 11 a.m to 2 p.m. today, Flynn will teach kids how to make wire sculptures while volunteers help them create tool-shaped cookies. The occasion is the SCFD Family Free Day at Foothills, 809 15th Street in Golden. For details, call 303-279-3922 or go to www.foothillsartcenter.org.
