Eating Around the World

There are some obvious challenges to creating an event titled A Taste of the Seven Continents, among them: What on earth comprises a taste of Antarctica? To answer that one, event chair Kerri-Ann Appleton asked Jon Emanuel — former executive chef at Antarctica's Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station and current executive chef for Project Angel Heart — what people eat in Antarctica. "And he was like, 'Honestly, they eat Antarctic cod and ice cream,'" she recalls.

The food-and-wine tasting (which also includes a silent auction) is a fundraiser for the Denver International Program, whose mission is cross-cultural exchange, so Appleton says she tries to mix it up when selecting fare from some of the other continents, including Asia and Europe: "Our goal is for people to try something new that they never thought they'd try, and walk away exposed to different cultures and the program.” The Taste will also incorporate entertainment elements from the seven continents when it circles the globe from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. tonight at Congregation Emanuel, 51 Grape Street. Admission is free (donations are welcome), but registration is required; visit www.dipusa.org to sign up.
