Gypsy Caravan

The great session guitarist John Jorgenson has certainly been around, and in more than one musical circle. He founded the Desert Rose Band with Chris Hillman, cut loose in a swingabilly tangent with fellow phenoms Will Ray and Jerry Donahue in the Hellecasters, and toured the world in Elton John’s band. But Jorgenson’s first love is gypsy jazz, the frenetic sound introduced by Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli in Paris in the 1930s, a passion well supported by the simultaneous release earlier this month of two CDs featuring Jorgenson gypsy-jazz projects: Istiqbal Gathering, a collaboration with Paul Gambill and Orchestra Nashville, and One Stolen Night, an album of Reinhardt-inspired modern tunes performed by the John Jorgenson Quintet.

Jorgenson, who is so enamored of Reinhardt that he even portrayed the gypsy guitarist in the film Head in the Clouds, will perform with his quintet at 8 p.m. tonight at Swallow Hill Music Hall, 71 East Yale Avenue. For tickets, $18 to $20, go to www.swallowhill.com or call 303-777-1003.
Fri., Feb. 26, 8 p.m., 2010
