Back to Its Roots

Swallow Hill Music has been going strong for thirty years, but the roots, folk and acoustic music it has always supported can still be heard and interpreted in plenty of new ways. "We definitely want to beat the stereotype that we're just for old folkies," says Swallow Hill spokesman Chip Herter, describing the diverse lineup for the fourth annual RootsFest. "We're continuing in our efforts to combine tradition with cutting-edge music, and we're excited to team up Judy Collins with Neko Case."

Tonight's stellar bill also includes Grammy-winning bluegrass musician Jim Lauderdale, innovative instrumental guitarist Trace Bundy and local act Paper Bird.

If the idea of seeing folk icon Collins and indie-rock darling and recent two-time Grammy nominee Case on the same stage isn't enough, rest assured that the other acts all have a few tricks up their sleeves. Just check out Trace Bundy's covers of Michael Jackson and Eminem on YouTube.

And thanks to Case's love of greyhounds (she owns three), a portion of the show's proceeds will go to Colorado Greyhound Adoption, to help find homes for displaced former race dogs. Tickets are $35 to $140 per person and can be purchased at www.swallowhillmusic.org or by calling 303-777-1003. The show begins at 7 p.m. at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House in the Denver Performing Arts Complex.
