Get Wild With Dave Eggers

Fifteen years ago, after picking up an issue of Might Magazine and laughing my ass off, I set off on the Herculean collector’s endeavor of keeping up with everything Dave Eggers wrote, published or otherwise orchestrated.

This year alone, in addition to writing the screenplay and monster fur-covered novelization for Spike Jonze’s adaptation of Where the Wild Things Are, Eggers published Zeitoun, a haunting non-fiction chronicle of Abdulrahman and Kathy Zeitoun’s epic misadventures in post-Katrina New Orleans, and established a foundation in the Zeitouns’ name to help rebuild the city and promote understanding between America and the Muslim world. (Zeitoun was a winner of the Muslim Public Affairs Council Media Award and was nominated this week for the L.A. Times Book Prize.) That’s on top of running an empire of writing and tutoring centers known as 826 National in L.A., San Francisco, Brooklyn, Seattle, Chicago, Ann Arbor and Boston, plus his monthly mag, The Believer, the Wholphin DVD series, and the McSweeney’s publishing house and quarterly journal.

That means the author will have plenty of ground to cover at An Evening With Dave Eggers, a reading and book signing beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Tattered Cover LoDo, 1628 16th Street. “All I can say is: Get in line,” says Charles Stillwagon, events manager for the store. “He has legions of devoted fans, the books are objects of art, and both Zeitoun and The Wild Things were wildly popular. I’ve had events with him go ’til one in the morning.” Free numbered tickets for a place in line will be available at 6:30 p.m.; get details at www.tatteredcover.com or call 303-436-1070.
