Before Denvers Su Teatro officially debuts its first production in its new digs at the Denver Civic Theatre later this month, the premier local Latino theater troupe will first sidetrack to South America for a weekend by presenting the Chilean ensemble Teatro en el Blanco in a trio of blockbuster performances featuring countryman Guillermo Calderón's powerful drama Diciembre, a play thats guaranteed to knock the wind out of all who see it. Selected for a Denver run as part of a National Performance Networks Performing Americas Project tour, Diciembre, which tells the story of a Chilean soldiers homecoming during a fictional war in the not-so-distant future, will be performed in Spanish with English supertitles at 7:30 p.m. nightly, today through Saturday.

There are plenty of reasons to see it during the short run, notes Su Teatros Mica Garcia de Benavidez, who took part in the networks jurying process: In Denver, theater in Spanish is a luxury; its not something we get every day. And this struck us as a show thats both solidly written and performed and that offers a different perspective on war than we usually get in the States, by pitting hard-core nationalism up against pacifist views. Plus, its treatment of immigrant issues crosses theatrical borders to strike a familiar chord with U.S. audiences.
