The World Is Your Oyster

“It takes a special breed to volunteer to eat as many oysters as you can in thirty seconds,” notes Adam Reed, general manager at Denver’s Jax Fish House. Which is why Reed encourages people to come and watch the annual Oyster-Eating Contest, the culmination of Jax’s Oyster Week featuring teams of four who must gulp down as many mollusks as possible in two minutes (thirty seconds per team member).

“The crowd’s eruptive,” Reed adds. “Once it starts, it’s like an out-of-control vehicle.” And that should prove true again this year, since several of the teams participated in previous years. “We had four teams last year and are hoping to have upwards of six,” Reed says. “So it’s a true rematch across the teams.

“I urge people to come and witness it because it is one of the most fun moments in our restaurant during the course of the year,” he adds. “The vibe on the floor is hugely brotherly; people are smiling; it’s loud and raucous and a good time.”

Proceeds from the team entry fees will benefit the Gathering Place, and this year, the prize is a trip for all four team members to Napa Valley. The celebrating will start at noon at Jax, 1539 17th Street, and the contest begins at 3 p.m.; call 303-292-5767 or visit www.oysterweeks.com for information.
