Sketch Appeal

It should be clear from the get-go that Spike and Sarah’s new sketch-comedy show, Oysters, Poles, and Beavers, doesn’t exactly contain your average family-friendly fare.

Performers Spencer Reedy, Mike Malyar and Sarah Kirwin, who make up Spike and Sarah, thought the time was ripe for something a little more grown-up. “I think while improv has kind of been thriving a little bit more lately in the Denver community, sketch comedy is really a lost art, and if you do see sketch comedy, it’s a lot of family-oriented comedy, Malyar says. “So we decided to do something for late-night, for a little bit more mature crowd…. We didn’t start writing that way, but as we were writing, it turned out that way, and that’s the direction it went in.”

You’ll see provocative and humorous vignettes about such topics as Slit Patrol, a band with some unusual members: Malyar recommends that you “be prepared for anything. Some of the sketches are absurd, some are a little bit more blue, but I think it’s a really good mixed bag of different characters and situations.”

Oysters, Poles, and Beavers opens tonight at the Avenue Theater, 417 East 17th Avenue, and continues every Saturday through April 17 at 10:15 p.m. Tickets are $8; cal 303-321-5925 or visit www.spikeandsarah.com.
Saturdays, 10:15 p.m. Starts: April 3. Continues through April 17, 2010
