"I think, locally, no one's ever really done a Japanese Cinema 101," explains Denver Film Society programming manager Keith Garcia. "Here are the classic Japanese filmmakers you should know; here are some great contemporary guys. And we have that all under one roof, under one weekend."

It's a chance to immerse yourself in everything from acknowledged classics such as The Seven Samurai and Zatoichi to delightful oddities such as the noodle epic Tampopo and the bizarre J-horror of Hausu. Even anime fans get a little service, with a screening of Satoshi Kon's excellent love letter to Japanese cinema, Millennium Actress. In between those extremes, four films from under-appreciated director Mikio Naruse are featured, alongside selections from Yasujiro Ozu, Hirokazu Kore-eda and Kiyoshi Kurasawa.

The series starts tonight at 7 p.m. with a showing of Naruse's When a Woman Ascends the Stairs at Starz FilmCenter, in the Tivoli Building on the Auraria campus; an opening reception at Domo (1365 Osage Street) follows.
