“What we have is all your favorite toys from your childhood, divided up into five different science concepts,” says Heritage Center curator Jamie Wilms. “The concepts are gravity, gears, aerodynamics, modern technology and motion, so you can come in and learn about a Slinky, and then how gravity affects the Slinky.” If you’ve always been curious about how the metal springs manage to “walk” down stairs, here’s your chance.

“One of the challenges was making sure that each science concept had a toy to represent it,” Wilms adds. “Motion has early-twentieth-century tin toys where you turn the key and it walks, and for gears, we used Tinker Toys.”

Game on! The Science of Toys runs through October 3, so you can catch this all-ages exhibit all summer long and into the fall. Admission to the center is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, $2 for kids ages three through twelve, and free for kids two and younger. The Heritage Center is at 801 South Yarrow Street, in Belmar Park.
