“If there is any city in the United States that has benefited from cannabis in a positive way, it’s Boulder,” says Dale Bridges, an organizer for the inaugural Boulder Cannabis Festival. “We wanted to celebrate the culture, the politics surrounding it, the medicinal qualities of cannabis — all those things.”

The festival, which starts tonight at 5 p.m. at the Fox Theatre, 1135 13th Street in Boulder, comprises a strain competition, dispensary tours (for medical cardholders exclusively) and the Cannaball, which will feature local musicians, artists and educational information in a masquerade-ball environment. “We’ll have magicians, hula-hoopers and jugglers,” Dale notes. “A guy’s going to make balloon animals. There will be burlesque dancers, and we’re encouraging people to dress in costume. There will be speakers talking about medical marijuana and some of the possible regulations and benefits from it in between acts, so if you don’t have a lot of information and would like to be a bit more informed, we’ll have an opportunity for that.

“We wanted something that was fun, but also classy and professional,” he adds. Musical guests include Ego vs. Id, Jus Goodie, Ukulele Loki, Onda and more; tickets are $20 in advance and $25 the day of the event, with an additional $2 charge for attendees under the age of 21.
