Showdown at the Echo Corral

Echo Mountain takes bragging rights seriously: It may be one of the smallest ski areas in Colorado, but it's also the closest to Denver, has one of the best terrain parks, and is keeping the party going long after most of its Front Range competitors have closed up for the season. For the fourth year in a row, Echo is claiming Last Park Standing honors with an end-of-season slopestyle showdown on the Backside and Pops trails under the Milk Run Special lift.

"We're going out with a bang," says Mark Moline, Echo's park designer. "It's going to be our most extensive park build of the year, and we're going to do a pretty diverse course with jibs, stalls, rails, boxes and some good-sized jumps, anywhere from fifteen feet all the way up to sixty feet. We'll also be unveiling some unique new stuff that skiers and riders haven't seen before, just trying to keep it creative."

The event features men's and women's ski and snowboard competition with pro, amateur, and grom divisions and over $5,000 in cash and prizes on the line, including skis and snowboards from Icelantic and Never Summer. Judges representing local shops and companies will score the best two of three runs for each rider. Pre-register online at www.EchoMt.com ($10 for am divisions, $15 for pro), or on the mountain from 9 to 10 a.m. for an extra five bucks. Closing day at Echo is May 2.
