How It’s Made

Some artistic processes are easier to understand than others. With painting and drawing, for example, you can figure out how the final products are created. But consider printmaking, with its wood blocks, photo etchings and monotypes. How do these work? Seriously, how?

“When you talk to people about prints,” says Deanne Gertner, administrative and program assistant for the Colorado Business Committee for the Arts, “they don’t really understand what they are.” Which is why at today’s CBCA-sponsored Open House at Open Press, master printer and artist Mark Lunning “will go through and explain what a print is, how each one is made,” she promises. Also on hand to discuss their craft will be printmakers Teresa Haberkorn, Jim Milmoe and Tony Ortega — all of whom, as well as Lunning, contributed limited-edition pieces to the Printfolio 2010 collection, on sale for $300.

“Buying original art is important for the arts community in Denver,” Gertner adds. “And with these artists, you could normally get one of their pieces for this price, not four.”

Proceeds from Printfolio sales benefit CBCA’s Leadership Arts program, which prepares individuals to serve on the boards of arts- and culture-related nonprofits. The free open house runs from 5 to 7 p.m. at Open Press Ltd., 40 West Bayaud Avenue; wine and cheese will be served. RSVPs are encouraged at dgertner@cbca.org or by calling 303-282-5135.
Tue., May 4, 5-7 p.m., 2010
