Tracy Weil is “knee deep in tomatoes,” which is a good thing for you. Why? Because before they plant their own urban beds, Weil and Heirloom tomato Farms partner Carolyne Janssen are throwing a two-day Heirloom Tomato Plant Sale at weilworks, 3611 Chestnut Place, which will overflow with more than fifty heirloom varieties handpicked from catalogues by the two lycopersicum lovers. Grown this year in the greenhouses at GrowHaus, the duo's organically raised plants range from old standbys like Beefsteak, Brandywine and Mortgage Lifter to more unique cultivars, such as White Beauty or Russian Rose. And, Weil notes, they’re already bigger than last year’s starts at this time.
Drop by between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. today or 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. tomorrow to pick out your favorites from a jungle of varieties; plants are $5 each. Later in the season, after Weil and Janssen harvest their citified plots in RiNo and Capitol Hill, the pair will most likely host a sale of the finished product: vividly colored orbs of pure tomato goodness, in all sizes and shapes.
