Anyone who’s ever had any question about whether immigrants are taking our jobs would do well to step into an immigrant’s shoes, at least in the metaphorical sense. Just such a learning experience can be found in the pages of Jean Kwok’s semi-autobiographical novel, Girl in Translation, the sharp-eyed tale of a Chinese-American immigrant girl from Hong Kong who toils after school in a Chinatown sweatshop at her mother’s side, seesawing back and forth between worlds both harsh and full of promise. Like Kwok herself, the girl eventually finds footing, ending up in the Ivy League in a story that simply demands respect.
