Make It Your Mission to Ride

There’s nothing like the camaraderie of an organized bike ride. No, scratch that. There’s nothing like the camaraderie of a non-competitive, organized bike ride. (“Non-competitive” is just a euphemism for beer, you know.) That’s what takes the Montrose Mission to Ride from merely kick-ass to truly bad-ass status. This marks the seventh year for the ride, which was launched by a group of physicians to help raise money for their free health-care clinic. “I’m an avid bike rider, and there was no local bike ride, and I just thought it was a good thing for the mission but also for Montrose itself and for the biking community,” says Blake Walker, a co-founder of the Montrose Medical Mission. The ride, which has grown to include about 300 riders, offers routes for different experience levels as well as different bikes. Roadsters can ride 30, 40, 60 or 100-mile routes, while mountain-bikers can go for 7.5 or 12. The 40-mile and century routes roll through a portion of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park.

Start times roll between 5:30 and 10 a.m. Support will be available, as will food, drink — including beer — and the music of Stephen Felberg at Montrose’s Rotary Park, where all routes begin and end. The ride costs $45 or $85 depending on the swag you choose, less for kids. Register online at www.missiontoride.com or at the event.
