Colorado has certainly had its fair share of bands with sprawling memberships. Fortunately, most of those groups have brought us some of the better music of the past several years. Boulder's Fellow Citizens (due at the Larimer Lounge on Friday, May 14) are no exception. Somehow all nine Citizens manage to blend a subtle yet vividly realized Americana with hypnotic cadences and stirring atmospheres. Though some will dub the Citizens shoegaze, even "bootgaze," neither of those terms applies here, as ill-fitting as they are of artists like Akron/Family and Daniel Lanois. Rather, the music of the Citizens, which sparkles with the feeling of endless possibilities, sounds more like what might have happened if slow-core acts such as Low and Tarnation had been influenced by a decade and a half of indie rock.
