For the Birds

The Rocky Mountain Flyway is one of four major bird migration routes in North America and just happens to run — fly? — right past Denver. To get a look at our fine feathered friends, stop by the National Urban Wildlife Refuge at Crown Hill Park in Lakewood from 1 to 4 p.m. (park in the main lot at West 26th Avenue and Garland Street) for the fifth and final Wings of Spring event. The 242-acre recreation area, which is operated by Jefferson County Open Space and the Lookout Mountain Nature Center, will have a team of naturalists talking about the many migrant birds passing through or returning home for the summer.

"We'll have naturalists stationed near the parking lot at Crown Hill to help spot and identify the birds, give some viewing tips, teach people how to use their binoculars and spotting scopes properly, and talk about conservation efforts to help protect the birds and their migratory routes," says the center’s Amanda Peterson.

The wetlands around Krestel Pond, in the northwest corner of the park, have been protected by the National Urban Wildlife Institute since 1991 and are closed from March 1 through June 30 every year to give the nesting waterfowl some privacy, but there should still be plenty of birds in the hand. "You could see as many as four dozen different avian species in the park on a good spring day," Peterson notes. No registration is required; for more information, call the Lookout Mountain Nature Center at 720-497-7600.
