The Whole World’s Watching

Ever seen a movie made in Armenia? How about one from Mozambique? Or Burkina Faso? Starting tonight and continuing through next Wednesday, the Denver Film Society will present the Human Rights Watch International Film Festival, featuring documentaries from all three of those countries as well as many others. For less than the cost of seeing Date Night, you can watch one of a number of feature-length and short films from around the world, selected because they “made up a nice cross-section of issues facing the world today,” says Brit Withey, DFS artistic director. They also “might generate good conversation,” he adds. Good point, because these films cover topics ranging from anti-Semitism to HIV in Africa to the International Criminal Court — subject matter much more sobering than the screwball antics of Tina Fey and Steve Carell. And many of the films were directed and/or produced by women and children.

The Human Rights Watch festival presents a rare opportunity to see so many cinematic projects bound together by the common thread of human rights. According to Withey, while this event takes place in various cities, the traveling component only occasionally makes it to Denver.

All screenings take place at Starz FilmCenter, in the Tivoli building on the Auraria campus. General-admission tickets are $9.75 per film, with discounts for students, seniors, Denver Film Society members and members of Emergency USA; receptions and panel discussions follow some showings.
