Isaiah "Ikey" Owens is the mad-genius keyboard player for the Mars Volta, but before that, he played with Sublime and the Long Beach Dub Allstars. On stage, Owens looks like a supernatural agency is at work, guiding his hands and body in a frantic display of instrumental wizardry. In his more high-profile gigs, he's a talented hired hand, but with Free Moral Agents, the creative vision is very much his own and that of his bandmates. Combining elements of jazz, trip-hop, improvisational rock and psychedelia, this side project is a force to be reckoned with. Those lucky enough to have seen Free Moral Agents at Old Curtis St. Bar last fall saw a memorably unfettered performance that probably needed a bigger space like the Gothic.
