On the Move

Italian sculptor Maria Cristina Carlini has come up with an interesting idea, though it’s difficult from a logistical standpoint. She creates bodies of monumental abstract works that travel the world. The vagabond Carlinis have now landed here for an ambitious two-part show at the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design and on the Auraria campus.

“I first saw a Carlini show in Madrid, and I knew I wanted to bring it here,” says Cortney Stell, RMCAD’s gallery director and curator of the local version. “It was done by INAC in Italy, and I established a relationship with Anselmo Villata, the director, and then got the commitment of the two institutions here. It’s so exciting.” Stell explains that Carlini’s pieces are monuments based on monuments done in industrial materials. And since they’re mobile, they subvert a longstanding notion in European sculpture: that a monument is permanent. Lucky for us, a couple of the Carlinis will become permanent, with both campuses getting to keep a piece when the show ends.
