What could be better in the middle of a holiday weekend than four stages of music, twenty bands, interactive booths, a gaming area and a beer garden? And all for free? This year’s Denver Day of Rock, a music festival designed to draw attention to the good work of local nonprofit Concerts for Kids, has doubled the number of stages used in last year’s inaugural event and brought all the action to the 16th Street Mall rather than splitting it up between downtown and Cherry Creek. In addition to a variety of local talent, national acts performing include Five For Fighting, the Fixx, the Romantics and Fishbone.

“We decided to bring something exciting to downtown Denver over Memorial Day weekend, especially for people who don’t like pictures and art,” spokeswoman Sally Hallingstad says. But if you’re interested in those things, too, the Downtown Denver Arts Festival is going on concurrently at the Denver Pavilions, 500 16th Street, just steps away from one Day of Rock stage at 16th and Welton streets.

The music starts at 2:30 p.m.; admission is, as mentioned, free, but you can opt to upgrade to Rock Star status by purchasing a $25 wrist band that entitles you to a beer mug and a sheet of coupons offering discounts on food or drink at selected mall restaurants, as well as at the beer garden (also at 16th and Welton).
