Gone to Pot

Reyna Von Vett (aka Cora Vette) was researching music in preparation for her next show, “a naughty jazz thing,” when the burlesque star stumbled on “a bunch of old pot songs.” Later, she says, “I started digging into my research and found there was a lot more than I realized.”

Enough to create this thirty-song extravaganza arranged by the Arvada Center’s David Nehls into an all-singing, all-dancing, all-smoking presentation. The result is Reefer Mania! Denver’s Gone to Pot, starring Reyna as Mary Jane.

“I love old naughty music, because it makes me giggle that your grandma was dirty, too,” she says. “The whole arc of the show is like a stoner’s trip.”

The production was choreographed by Margaret Skokan, whom burlesque fans might know as Petra Puse. “All the girls are named after pot strains, as well. So now our alter egos have alter egos. It’s a cool way to tie it all together, and there’s a lot of group dancing that’s really stylistically appropriate.”

Expect paranoia, laughter and a lot of smoke and mirrors. Reefer Mania! opens tonight and runs Thursdays through Saturdays through July 3 at the Crossroads Theater, 2590 Washington Street, at 8 p.m.; tickets are $18. Visit www.burlycute.com.
Thursdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m. Starts: June 3. Continues through July 3, 2010
