Help in the ’Hood

As a homeowner in a demographically diverse Denver neighborhood, I don’t have to dream up hypothetical scenarios to justify attending today’s Annual Neighborhood Conference, “The Denver Difference — Block by Block.” I need more District 2 patrols in my alley to discourage graffiti, but don’t know how to get them. I want the owner of a vacant lot on my block to clean up the trash once in a while, but don’t know who to call.

“Some who attend the conference are more active in their communities,” explains Denver neighborhood relations director Heather Barry, “brand-new homeowners excited about being part of a neighborhood, or even renters who feel very involved and are seeing their neighborhoods change. For others, this will be their first conference, and they just want to skill-build and network. It’s really the full gamut of Denver residents who want resources.” Resources include workshops — on topics ranging from community mediation (dealing with difficult people) to the medical marijuana ordinance to park stewardship — and access to folks with answers, including the mayor, police officers, city councilors and keynote speaker Mike Green of the Asset Based Community Development Institute Facility.

The free conference with complimentary breakfast runs from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Coors Field, 2001 Blake Street. Register in advance and get more information by calling 720-865-9103 or e-mailing neighborhoodconference@denvergov.org.
Sat., June 5, 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m., 2010
