Opposing Viewpoints

Bobbi Walker, owner of Walker Fine Art, has put together Altered, an unlikely duet in which she’s paired contemporary-realist paintings by Marie Vlasic with non-objective abstract sculptures by Mark Castator. This exhibit marks the first time either artist has been given a star turn at Walker.

For her recent body of work, Vlasic has focused on the tattooed figure, which the artist says both fascinates and repulses her. “Marie's nude portraits are an exciting step-out for the gallery,” says Walker, noting the edgy content of the pictures. “It’s her superior execution that takes viewers beyond simple voyeurism and instead brings them into the heart of the individual's need for this kind of personal adornment.”

Castator’s works come from a different place — to say the least. “Mark takes his work a leap forward, using negative space to lend the works a feeling of precarious balance,” explains Walker. “His abstracted forms constructed of severed steel appear to be weightless, rising upward, rather than being visually held down to their bases.”

Altered opens tonight with a reception from 6 to 9 p.m. at the gallery, 300 West 11th Avenue. Learn more at www.walkerfineart.com or by calling 303-355-8955.
