The Getdown! didn't channel the ghost of James Brown so much as the would-be love child of frayed garage-rock psychopaths the Sonics and the arch post-punk of the Blackouts. But while superficially this band's music could be lumped in with garage rock, it goes further into droning atmospheres with its driving yet minimalist rhythms than most like-minded artists. The project's recent name change might be a bit of an inside joke about how Dustin Lawlor and Tom Nelson relate to the world in general, but there has always been something savage about Lawlor's bass playing and vocal delivery, matched by Nelson's nuanced yet relentless attack. Between the two, Vicious Women (due at the Larimer Lounge on Sunday, June 6) is mapping the terrain of a branch of garage rock that embraces the attitude, but not a specific style.
