History for Hooligans
The 62nd annual FIBArk Whitewater Festival — “America’s Oldest and Boldest” — on the Arkansas River officially runs June 17 through 20, but head down early for today’s Yoga for Boaters session at the Yoga Tonic (8:30 a.m., 301 Oak Street, Salida) if you’re planning to participate in any of the kayaking, rafting, or stand-up paddleboarding events over the next few days. “The instructor is going to really focus on shoulder strengthening and stretching specific to paddlers,” reports FIBArk board of directors president Samantha Lane. “Any of the pro and amateur athletes competing will really appreciate the extra warmup, and I’d recommend it for the Hooligan Racers, too.”
Hooligan Racers? “The Hooligan Race, on Saturday at 5 p.m. in Salida Whitewater Park, is our most infamous event,” Lane says. “Anyone can enter, and you can float down the river in anything except a boat. You’ll see blowup dolls, kegs, old furniture — total mayhem. It's really fun to enter if you're not afraid to swim in really cold water.” And while the beer and the music and the Hooligan Race are a blast, Lane points out that FIBArk is “the longest-running whitewater and downriver racing competition in the world, with a proud history dating to 1949, and sometimes the crazy stuff can overshadow that.” For a full schedule and more info, visit www.FIBArk.net
